Quick Post — How Not to Write a Novel

My favourite writing book is How Not to Write a Novel by Howard Mittelmark and Sandra Newman. I come back to it reguarly. Not only is it fun to read, but it keeps me grounded. Everytime I think, ‘I’ve got this writing thing down; I’m too good of a writer to make stupid mistakes’, I pick up Mittlemark and Newman’s book to remind myself that writing-hubris is a bitch. My work does encompass some writing ‘don’ts’, they need to be fixed, and an ego will only keep my work from being the best it can be.

The blog, TVTropes, kindly summarises the book, which is a nice way to keep you on track and well worth a read. But, for that extra kick, pick up the book. You won’t regret it.
