I would walk 26.2 miles

Crossing the Edinburgh Moon Walk finishing line -- 2013

Crossing the Edinburgh Moon Walk finishing line — 2013

I wouldn’t usually use the blog for the promotion of non-creative writing related events, but I’ve got ten days to raise £100 for the Edinburgh MoonWalk, and I’ve only raised £26.50 so far.

The Edinburgh MoonWalk is a charity event in which thousands of women walk a night marathon through the streets of Edinburgh in their bra to raise money for Cancer research and sufferer-support. (You can read more about it here.)

All us ladies (and a few men) waiting to get our midnight start for the walk - 2013.

I did the event last year, and while grueling it was extremely rewarding. I did the walk on my own — which I prefer to do as I can set my own pace — but the camaraderie was infectious. From the walkers themselves, to the organisers, to the sponsors, the the hundreds of volunteers, everyone was positive and ready for the challenge. I left last year’s event energised, despite the 26.2+ miles that had just pounded my feet. In fact, I completed the event in just over 7 hours, which was faster than any of my times during training. The atmosphere of thousands of women marching through the night made me keep pace and push through to morning.

Started at midnight ended at 7.12 am. Not bad time. Think I can do it again for 2014?

Here’s how it works.

  • You donate as much or as little as you like. You don’t have to donate per mile, or guess how long it will take me to walk the course. You just donate. It’s that easy for you.
  • Then, I walk 26.2 miles (plus the walking to and from the event) on the night of 7 June.
  • The money raised goes to Breast Cancer charities such as Scalp Coolers, Penny Brohn Cancer Care, Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Maggie’s Centre, the Breast Cancer Institute, and Christies.

Donate by going to my giving page here. Easy peasy.

I think it would be nice to recognise those who have donated to my walk this year:
    The lovely Karen Graham.
The ever so cheerful Gordon Ramsay
And my immortal beloved, Kristopher Getchell, has just pledged.

Oh, and I should not forget the Annie Bottoms has offered non-monetary support.

Thanks to Marilyn Baker (the creator of the Braemar Arts Festival and very talented author) for her donation.
Also a huge thank you to the sweetest lady and mum of such a great friend, Lorna Graham, for her donation.

A lovely lady named Diane, who did not leave her details but I know who she is, donated in honour of her friend Ruth who passed away from the illness last December. Thank you so much Diane.
