Editing is Hard when Writing is Good

I’ve been commissioned to copy edit a book by Ann Crew. It’s her second book in a series of many, and I started working on it today. Unfortunately, taking on this job has become problematic. When copy editing, I should be looking for typos, grammatical errors, and style and syntactical glitches. But, Ann’s story is so fast paced that I breezed through three chapters before I realised that I wasn’t reading as an editor. Instead, I was enjoying the book and reading it as, well, a reader. I guess I’m saying that editing a book with clunky writing is easy, but editing a well written book is hard.

You can get Ann’s first book (which I didn’t edit but was runner up for the ShortbreadStories ‘Self-Publish or Perish’ competition), A Murder in Malta, from Amazon.
